Some groups, including health and other frontline workers, students, people living alone, and those with pre-existing mental health conditions, have been particularly affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center; white-space: pre-wrap;\">By working together as a community we can raise awareness about:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center; white-space: pre-wrap;\">1) What to know about mental health disorders<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center; white-space: pre-wrap;\">2) What you can do for treatment; and<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center; white-space: pre-wrap;\">3) How to get help for yourself family member or friend<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center; white-space: pre-wrap;\">This is in no way exhaustive and complete but here are some quick notes to equip yourself appropriately.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><strong>What is mental health?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Mental health is an integral and essential component of our health. The WHO constitution states: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-health-strengthening-our-response\">Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">An important implication from this is mental health is a lot more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Mental health as defined by WHO is \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-health-strengthening-our-response\">a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community<\/a>.\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">It is fundamental to our collective and individual ability as humans to think, feel, interact with each other, earn a living and enjoy our lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">On this basis, the promotion, protection and restoration of mental health can be regarded as a vital concern of individuals, communities and societies throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><strong>What is depression?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">It is an illness characterised by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, together with difficulty carrying out daily activities.<\/p>\n<p>People with depression often experience:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">A loss of energy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Change in appetites<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Either sleeping more or less than normal<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Anxiety<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Reduced concentration<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">What you can do if you have symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Talk to someone you trust<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Seek professional help<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Stay connected with family and friends<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Exercise regularly<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Stick to regular eating and sleeping habits<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Avoid high amounts of alcohol intake<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\">\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><strong>Living with someone with depression<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">What you can do:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Encourage them to focus on the positive, rather than negative<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Encourage them to seek professional help<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">If they\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2re prescribed medication, remind them to take it<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Help them with everyday tasks<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Encourage them to do everyday tasks and social activities<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\">\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><strong>Self-harm or suicidal behaviour<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Are you experiencing any of the following?<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Pain that seems overwhelming and unbearable<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Feeling of worthlessness or hopelessness<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" professional<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Join a support group<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Contact emergency services or a crisis help line<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\">\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><strong>Know someone thoughts, feelings or plans about ending their life<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Saying &#8220;goodbye\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d to close family members and friends<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Giving away valued possessions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Who is at risk?<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">People who have tried to take their own life before<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Someone who is socially isolated<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">People living with chronic pain and illness<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">People who have experienced violence, abuse or other trauma<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">People from groups of society that are marginalized or discriminated against<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">What you can do:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Find an appropriate time and quiet place to talk to with them<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Let them know you are there to talk to and give support<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Encourage them to seek help from a health professional<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">If you think someone is in immediate danger, don\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2t leave them alone.
